Why learn magic?
Magic is a fascinating art form, combining dexterity of hands, psychology, and communication. By learning magic, you're learning about how people think and perceive the world, and about the value of mystery in our lives. Step by step, learning magic is a way to develop a unique style and approach to creative expression.
How to learn magic?
Like any art form - music, painting, photography, drama - magic is something that can be learned by anyone with the desire and curiosity to do so. There are countless magic books and lectures out there, for anyone to study. However, it's easy to feel overwhelmed and confused: which books or videos are suited to me? There are thousands of videos on YouTube, but are they any good? How can I even tell if a certain trick is advanced or for beginners? What makes 'good magic'?
This is where magic tuition comes in, and I am extremely happy to be able to be able to offer 1-to-1 magic lessons. I can provide you with expert tuition, in order to help you navigate the magic literature, mentor you in sleight of hand technique, as well as everything about the performance of magic: misdirection, timing, psychology, script writing, the communication with your audience, and more.
How do the lessons work?
After writing to me, we can arrange to have a free consultation session, to see what you'd like to learn, and whether I am the right tutor for you. In this first session, we can talk about which models of magic inspire you (which magicians, which tricks, which magic 'genres'), and we can go over some practice together, such as a trick or a technique.
We can then arrange to have 1-hour lessons, which take place weekly, or once every 2 weeks, via Zoom (unless you happen to be living in Brighton).
About me
My specialty is in close-up magic, especially sleight of hand with cards, coins and other objects.
I began studying magic when I was 13, and spent my teenage years obsessively reading magic books and practicing. I won 1st place at the Italian National championsip of close-up magic, and 2nd place at the International Magic Competition (aka Ron McMillan's). In 2001 I gained entry to the Magic Circle with an original thesis called 'Deconstructing Magic'.
Outside of magic, I have 20 years experience in writing and performing in original theatre shows around the world.
I have a first class degree in Theatre from Dartington College of Arts, and I hold a PhD in Theatre studies from the University of Roehampton. Since 2016 I have been working as a Lecturer in Drama at the University of Sussex, where I teach all aspects in the theory and practice of contemporary performance.
